Dear KCKPS Families

Due to the high number of staff absences caused by COVID-19 and other illnesses, Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools is cancelling school for Tuesday, January 18 and Wednesday, January 19.

The closure means all KCKPS school campuses will be closed. The District had more than 200 teaching positions unfilled last Friday requiring District staff to fill the vacancies. We hope the five-day weekend including no school on Monday, Jan. 17, for Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday will provide the recovery time individuals need to avoid further disruption to the learning process.

After School Programs
The closure also includes cancellation of before and after school care/KidZone.

Meal Service
The District will provide curbside meals from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at the following locations:

• Banneker Elementary School
• Eisenhower Middle School
• Carl B Bruce Middle School
• Rosedale Middle School
• FL Schlagle High School

Families will not need to pre-register to pick up meals.

High School Activities and Athletics
Activities and athletics that are scheduled at the high school level may continue if the activity can be staffed. Information about cancellations will be communicated to students and parents through their coaches and high school athletic directors. Cancellations will also be shared on the District’s social media platforms.

The closure does not include Central Office and the Public Libraries. These location will be open during their regular business hours.

The decision to cancel school on Tuesday and Wednesday was a difficult one and was not taken lightly. Once again, the closure allows staff who are ill enough time to recover and return to work after being quarantined. Students and staff are expected to return on Thursday, January 20.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during these challenging times.
